Senior OT Systems Engineer
As a Senior OT Systems Engineer with a focus on PLC / SCADA, you help industrial clients deliver process automation improvements using factory automation tooling. You combine deep S7/TIA engineering with consultancy-grade stakeholder management, junior coaching, and disciplined delivery from design to commissioning. This role builds a pathway toward a future Team Leader position.
Tech stack focus
· PLC: Siemens S7 / TIA Portal
· SCADA: iFIX, Ignition, WinCC
· Industrial networks · Bonus: PCS 7 / Rockwell and DCS ownership, Historian, other automation software
Where you add value
· You assess the as-is PLC, SCADA, and industrial network landscape (architecture, standards, performance, and risk hotspots) and translate findings into a prioritized improvement roadmap.
· You deliver continuous process automation using factory automation tooling. You engineer stable process behaviour: sequences, phases, interlocks, abnormal situation handling, and predictable recovery.
· You bridge operations, process, and automation: you translate process intent into a control strategy and operator guidance, with explicit trade-offs on safety, availability, and product quality.
· You reduce start-up risk through engineering discipline: strong upfront analysis, structured design, test evidence, and clean handover - fewer commissioning surprises and better repeatability.
Your responsibilities include
· Lead projects as technical lead: define technical approach, standards, align with architects, and execution plan through commissioning and hypercare.
· Drive consultancy-style delivery: facilitate workshops, challenge assumptions, align stakeholders, and lock decisions.
· Translate process intent into control strategy: operating modes, sequences/phases, interlocks, alarming philosophy, and recovery paths.
· Engineer robust PLC software in Siemens S7 / TIA Portal: modular architecture, diagnostics, safe-state behaviour, boundary conditions, and maintainability.
· Deliver SCADA solutions in iFIX / Ignition / WinCC: operator-focused HMI, alarm rationalization, trends, data model and structure from the source, data integrity checks, and usability improvements.
· Own integration topics: industrial connectivity (e.g., OPC), interface definition, network awareness, and structured troubleshooting across layers.
· Execute and steer testing: simulation, FAT/SAT, commissioning, punch listing, and controlled change implementation.
· Coach and direct junior engineers: task breakdown, design/code/test reviews, documentation standards, and professional growth.
· Own engineering time management: flexible planning, dependency management, and early communication of impact on critical milestones (design freeze, FAT readiness, commissioning windows).
What we’re looking for
Essential skills
· Strong experience in process automation projects using Siemens S7 / TIA Portal and one or more SCADA platforms (iFIX, Ignition, WinCC).
· Scripting/data skills (Python, SQL) for tooling, diagnostics, or data quality work.
· Technical lead maturity: autonomous delivery, decision-making under constraints, and clear alignment with customers and internal stakeholders.
· Consultancy mindset: you challenge assumptions early, manage expectations, and translate complexity into decision-ready options.
· People leadership: you steer and grow junior engineers through direction, reviews, and coaching - without micromanaging.
· Out-of-the-box thinking: you propose pragmatic alternatives when constraints block the default approach, without cutting corners on safety or outcomes.
· Drive and dedication: you take ownership and stay committed until the job is truly done - issues closed, performance stabilized, and handover complete.
· Continuous improvement: you standardize delivery (libraries, templates, lessons learned) and raise the bar for every project.
· Analytical problem-solving: you move from symptom -> root cause -> preventive control, backed by evidence.
· Attention to detail across design, programming, testing, and documentation: boundary conditions, failure modes, test coverage, traceability, and clean handover.
· Quality focus: you understand what drives quality - clarity up front (requirements and acceptance criteria), disciplined design reviews before coding, standards and peer reviews as real gates, risk-based testing with evidence, and controlled change management.
· Professional English communication in an international delivery environment.
Nice to have
· Working knowledge of the GAMP V-model and validation-style delivery (traceability, test evidence, controlled changes), especially in regulated environments.
· OT/IT exposure: network topologies, cybersecurity basics, and interface-heavy environments.
· Multi-platform commissioning and troubleshooting experience across different industrial sites.
